Beacons Network is a US-based project started in 2017 in reaction to the impact hurricane Maria had in the Caribbean.

In the aftermath of large scale disasters, cellular networks and power grids are down for an unknown period of time, leaving people cut-off from the rest of the world. Therefore, the motivation of this project is to provide people with the possibility of giving news to their friends and loved ones.

Beacons Network is developing an "off-the-grid" access point that provides a large group of people the ability send a short message and a picture via satellite for free, using wifi-capable devices. This device will be easy to carry, have low energy consumption and have low production cost.
